Kunstruimte Berlin Kunstruimte Berlin was the independent Berlin outpost of the Kunstruimte Kampen gallery – today, it would probably be called a project space. It was a Dutch – German adventure. Tucked away in the courtyard of Sophienstraße 18 in Berlin-Mitte, right next to the Sophiensäle, it was a place separate from the hustle and bustle of Auguststraße. The only time candied apples became the greatest enemies of art was in winter, when the traditional Christmas market claimed the Sophienstraße for four weeks. From 1996 until the end of 2001, Susanne Dietze, Alekos Hofstetter, Boris Abel and Oliver Baurhenn regularly invited exciting artists to exhibit here. If things were quiet at Eigen + Art, the gallery owned by Judy Lybke, down the street, it was only because everyone had come to the opening in Kunstruimte’s enchanting courtyard.
